The iron shares many similarities with its well-known sister iron, the P790, but enjoys a slimmer, more compact, more players-oriented profile and is designed to provide a bit more control and workability.

The Features

The 2024 P·770 is a fully forged hollow-body iron with a precision milled clubface. Fine-tuned to provide the best feel of any P770 iron yet, it benefits from:

• FLTD CG (or ‘Flighted Center of Gravity’): a progressive CG that is lowest in the long irons for higher launch and higher in the short irons for more precise control.
• SpeedFoam Air: a proprietary, super-light urethane foam injected into the head, just behind the face, that is primarily designed to provide a premium feel and sound.
• Thru-Slot Speed Pocket:this pocket increases sole flexibility, leading to increased ball speed and forgiveness low on the face.
• a refined tungsten weight used to precisely position the center of gravity (CG) for more forgiveness than the 2023 model

The Performance

In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the 2024 P770 irons. Let’s jump right in.

Distance

The 2024 P770 irons don’t quite have the raw ball speed potential of the P790, but the difference is small, especially considering the weaker lofts.

Ball speeds appear to be similar to the 2023 P770 based on my field test. I was thinking I might see a noticeable increase in ball speeds and carry distance, but it’s frankly not that important in a players’ iron.

Whether or not you’ll get good distance with the P770 will depend on your shot characteristics; if your natural ball flight is too high or too low, this iron can work against you.

Forgiveness

TaylorMade classifies the forgiveness of the 2024 P770 as “mid”. It’s not as forgiving as the P790 but is more forgiving than the P7CB, P7MB, and P7TW models.

All things considered, this iron gives you just enough forgiveness to take the edge off your worst swings, but is also unforgiving enough to encourage you to make quality contact.

Ball speed preservation and dispersions are good as far as players’ irons go, and the hollow body construction only helps in this regard. Having said this, overall forgiveness doesn’t seem to be much different than the 2023 P770.

Playability/Trajectory

The 2024 P770 iron tends to produce a mid trajectory with mid-high spin. The flight bias is neutral. I found this to again be similar to the 2023 model.

While the initial launch angle tends to be lower than the P790 (the result of a higher CG), better players will typically be able to manage this by taking advantage of the higher spin potential with slightly weaker lofts.

Stopping power coming into the greens is great. Workability is also great; I didn’t notice any particular weakness when it comes to flighting the ball up, down, left or right.

Short irons are easy to control coming into the greens, but those with slower swing speeds may have a bit of a hard time getting their long iron shots airborne.

The Look

The 2024 P770 is classified by TaylorMade as a “modern players’ iron”. It’s bulkier than the P7CB, P7MB, and P7TW irons but is more compact than the P790, with a shorter blade length from heel to toe and less offset.

The thickness of the top line is actually similar to the 2025 P790, and in fact, you can think of the P770 as a more compact P790 in many ways.

These irons boast a premium satin finish. Unlike previous models which had the logo detail on the heel side, the logo of the 2024 model is centered on the back of the iron for a fresh visual presentation.

Whether you’re looking at the iron up close or setting up behind the ball, the players’ profile is clear, and moreover, the irons look amazing and simplistically luxurious in the bag.

The Sound & Feel

As with previous iterations, the 2024 P770 is quieter off the face compared to the P790, but it’s still responsive. The more muted feel is solid but has a nice softness to it that you only really experience with forged players’ irons.

The wonderful sweet-spot feel gives you a pretty strong incentive to make good contact.

The sound at impact is a crisp, medium-pitched “whack”. Mis-hit feedback is informative — more so than the P790 model, predictably. The sound gets a little less crisp in mis-hit areas, but most of the feedback is felt through the hands.

In my opinion, the feel and sound of the 2024 P770 iron is at least as good as any of the older P770 models and is probably even more satisfying assuming you make good contact.

Final Thoughts

A great way to describe the TaylorMade 2024 P·770 iron is that it’s a more compact version of the P·790 — at least the P790 models before 2025, as the latest one has a thinner top line that looks similar to the P770.

This iron is going to give you more forgiveness than the P·7CB but a bit more control and workability than the P790. It’s supposed to be slightly more forgiving than the 2023 P770, although I didn’t see clear evidence of this myself in my testing; I found the biggest improvement to be in the feel.

Overall, this iron could be a fantastic addition to the bag of many single-digit and even low-teen handicap players, who may prefer to pair them with P7CB or P790 irons in a combo set.
